Laser technology provides precision to your prototype

The use of a laser cutting and engraving machines for architectural prototyping provides a wide range of benefits over traditional methods such as milling, plotting and saw cutting. Trotec Laser, manufacturer of laser machines, explains how laser technology can bring advantage to architectural model making, including reducing production time by up to 80%.

Often when creating architectural models, there is a need to incorporate great levels of detail and complex geometries. The laser’s ultra fine beam lends itself to accurately creating filigree or other intricate designs to within a tenth of a millimetre; as well as to marking inscriptions as fine as 1pt. in thickness.

With the ability to process a wide range of materials such as woods, textiles, cardboard, foam, polystyrene, acrylic and films; a laser cutter is a versatile tool for creating multi-material architectural models.

A dual-source CO2 and fiber laser machine, such as Trotec’s Speedy Flexx option, further improves the potential of laser technology within architectural applications. The ability to use colour-coding in the model artwork to command the laser to automatically switch between fiber and CO2 sources, ensures the best engraving process is used for each individual material without having to manually change tubes or use an alternative tool; saving time and resulting in optimum results every time.

In addition to high accuracy and speed, using a laser machine during architectural model making provides other cost-saving benefits over traditional methods. The laser evaporates the material as it is processed so no swarf or shavings are produced, reducing disposal costs. The beam remains ‘laser sharp’ and can process a range of materials in varying thicknesses and shapes without the requirement for many different tool heads. Thus reducing production time and eliminating sharpening costs.

Laser cutting is a contactless process with no pressure being exerted on the material, reducing preparation time and the risk of damage which is present when clamping material for milling. It is also possible to achieve crystal clear acrylic cut edges, without any manual flame polishing or additional processes. Trotec customers report that when cutting individual components using a Trotec laser, production times can be reduced by up to 80% compared to manual production methods.
