35 Cosway Street, was granted a Grade II* Listing in 1954. It is a distinctive deconsecrated church in the Lisson Grove Conservation Area. Greenhouse Sports was founded in 2002 as a sports coaching charity and initially set out to provide deprived young people something positive to do in the school holidays. Recently, they acquired 35 Cosway Street, located in one of the most deprived wards in London, and have refurbished the building into a state of the art sports centre that enables them to extend their sport development model into the community.
A radical and sensitive transformation was required to turn the church into a sports centre. Surrounded by local shops, residential areas and community buildings including a school; sound insulation was imperative to stop noise escaping and disturbing local residents. Latitude architects specified the use of secondary glazing to provide sound insulation; a reduction of 46dB was required. In addition, it was required to improve the thermal properties of the building and provide guarding. Royal Warrant Holder, Selectaglaze manufactured and installed 88 units which were a combination of Series 42 fixed lights with curved and standard heads, as well as Series 80 3HS contra sliding units. Some of the Series 80 were 1.9m (h) x 2.3m (w) and weighed over 130kg when all assembled. The units came in 3 separate panes to enable manual handling and accessing the specific areas for installation.
The Banqueting House, Whitehall lies at the heart of the tourist trail with Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey, Downing Street and Trafalgar Square all a short walk away. Banqueting House is managed and cared for by Historic Royal Palaces, the independent charity that also cares for the Tower of London, Hampton Court Palace, Kensington State Apartments, Kew Palace and Hillsborough Castle. The security window installations were part of the first phase of works to repair and restore this stunning Grade I Listed building. Security was a key concern when planning the works, as was reducing the noise breakthrough from the busy Whitehall thoroughfare.
Banqueting House was treated with Selectaglaze blast units to provide ample levels of security to protect the Rubens ceiling painting, historic architectural features and those who visit/use the Royal Palace. The design replaced the blast net curtains as well as providing a significant level of noise insulation. Testing was carried out for what turned out to be the largest ever single casement to be blast tested in the UK, as the Main Hall window openings are 3.6m high and 2.0m wide. A careful method of installation was devised involving a columnar scaffolding design complete with lifting apparatus to each opening. In all, 39 units were installed.
Secondary glazing is fitted to the room side of a building and is a completely independent and fully reversible adaptation, widely accepted by most heritage bodies.
