Sheffield property developers Ashgate and HLM have submitted plans for the renovation, refurbishment and extension of the ‘Nichol’s Building’ on Shalesmoor roundabout.
As part of the plans, the former grocer’s warehouse will be developed with a new single storey extension and a seven-storey block to the south-west of the site and converted into a mixed-use scheme, comprising ground floor commercial space and mix of 48 high quality studio, one and two-bedroomed residential units developed specifically for rental by a professional landlord.
The development lies within the Furnace Hill conservation area and steps have been taken by the design team to protect and enhance the heritage of the building. The three-story Victorian frontage that faces onto Shalesmoor and Shepherd Street will be retained, and existing brickwork and sandstone features will be restored. As a result of the redevelopment, the ground floor commercial space will be made more accessible, with the introduction of step free access.
The new complex will be renamed Nichols & Co in honour of the wholesalers who were once housed within the building.
